Cool Tech: The Garmin Quatix Watch
‘Part of the ship. Part of the crew’ is how Garmin describes its Quatix Watch. This is because so many of the features are perfect for assisting marine navigation, and enhancing your experience on the water. It's really been designed with mariners in mind!
First there’s the high-sensitivity GPS Garmin navigator that you can load with sailing or kayaking routes, mark waypoints and use to guide you to your destination and safely back.
There’s also a 3-axis compass, a race countdown timer, a virtual starting line and tack assist. This incredible timepiece can even help you read the weather with a built-in barometer and temperature sensor. Our video gives further insights into what the Garmin Quatix is capable of.
- Virtual Starting Line - Set up a virtual starting line between two marked GPS waypoints, for example between a buoy and the committee boat.
- Start Countdown Timer - quatix combines the starting line with a built-in countdown timer to calculate both distance to the line as well as desired speed and burn time available, so you can skipper the vessel to cross the line at maximum speed at the exact start time.
- Tack Assist mode - Once the race has begun, the watch then switches to Tack Assist mode and indicates whether the vessel is getting headed or lifted based on the optimal tack angle provided and makes for a more efficient and controlled sailing experience.
