Cool Tech: Vaavud Smartphone Wind Meter
The Vaavud Wind Meter was created by a team of Danish inventors, and their smart yet simple idea has already proved massively popular with the sailing fraternity. It’s a phone app that turns your phone into a handheld wind meter - it can tell you the current wind speed without the use of electronic components.
The highly durable plastic rotor plugs into your iPhone or Android device’s headphone jack and connects with the app on the phone to give you very accurate readings. It uses no power, and actually talks wirelessly to your phone via the built-in magnetic field sensor that are built into modern smartphones. Apparently the secret is a few small magnets in the rotor. The magnetic field changes are then converted into windspeed readings.
When testing this clever product we felt that the Vaavud wind meter is incredibly durable as well as intelligent. People who need a meter regularly— particularly windsurfers and sailors— can use it in extreme conditions. We conclude that the ability to turn your smartphone into a high-tech meteorological tool is pretty amazing!
Here’s our video review:
The Vaavud wind meter works with all iPhones from 4 and onwards, and all iPads from 2 and onwards, running on iOS 6 or 7.
For Android phones Vaavud have currently confirmed it to work with Samsung Galaxy S3 and S4, HTC one and Google Nexus 5, as well as a number of other devices.
