Ultrasonic antifouling for smaller boats
Ultrasonic Works recently launched a new low-cost ultrasonic antifouling system for boats up to 10 meters called The One.
Using the existing ClearHull system, the One has been simplified because the control panel facilities have been removed. The system also boasts an innovative mounting base and a dual frequency transducer. We asked Dave Hall, Head of UK Sales at Ultrasonic Works to explain what makes The One different from previous anti-fouling ultrasonic products on the market, and why it might appeal to boat owners with smaller vessels.
• With Ultrasonic Works systems generally, what are the main benefits over anti-fouling paints?
Boat owners never look forward to the annual drudgery of cleaning their boats bottom, preparation and repainting, usually with at least two coats of expensive antifouling paint every season. Ultrasonic antifouling does not dispense with an antifouling coating as it is advised to paint the hull first with a hard antifouling. However, the Ultrasonics will then ensure that the hull is kept clear of growth, season after season only requiring the antifouling coating to be touched up occasionally for aesthetic reasons.
• What is different about The One compared to previous Ultrasonic antifouling systems?
The One is a low cost Ultrasonic antifouling option from Ultrasonic Works costing just £399, considerably less than other systems on the market. It is designed for boats up to 10 metres which research has shown, require just one transducer. It does not have the SMM reporting system and controls that the ClearHull offers but still has a smart system which shuts the system down in the event of a severe drop in battery levels.
• What makes it low cost?
Stripping out all the additional controls and reporting of the ClearHull. No reduction is made in the high quality of the transducer or efficiency of the system.
• What makes it high performance?
The CNC machined, marine grade anodised alloy transducer housing manufactured by Ultrasonic Works has been designed and manufactured to extremely high levels with a unique patented system developed to fix the transducer to the hull ensuring100% transfer of the sonic protection around the hull. This means less power is needed to achieve equivalent, or in most cases significantly better results than other systems on the market.
• Which type of boat owners should be interested in this system?
The system is suitable for any GRP or metal hulled vessel up to 10 metres, sail or power. Larger vessels should use the ClearHull which can use any number of transducers which Ultrasonic Works will advise for a particular boat.
• Will it drain battery power over time?
The Ultrasonic Works One system has the lowest battery usage of any ultrasonic system. The smart technology used ensues it will not drain the battery completely if the boat is unused for a long period and will increase power automatically as soon as the battery is fully charged.
• What safety issues should boat owners be concerned about with The One?
None, all Ultrasonic Works systems are unique in having just 12v running through the cable which is safer than the more common 1000 volts of other systems on the market.
• Can the electronics interfere with communication systems on board?
With just 12v passing through the cable any interference with wireless navigation or communication systems on board is eliminated.
• How long will it work for?
All Ultrasonic Works systems have been designed for infinite usage, built with the highest quality marine grade materials.
