In fact, it’s only by carefully examining the spaces there that you will get a true understanding of the design philosophy behind architect Carlo Trezzi’s ideas for this boat. What you’ll find tucked between the anchor winch, the pulpit and the raked windshield is an authentic cockpit and a roomy one at that. And it’s fitted out with three sofas, two king-size sun pads, two tables and a fridge. A space designed to enjoy the sun and sea from with one’s friends and not just when riding at anchor, but even when under way at a brisk pace. Even then, whoever is taking the helm will be able to enjoy not only the sun on their face and the breeze in their hair but also the fact that not only are the engine sounds beautifully damped but even the boat’s movement itself is easy on the ears. The DP 72 really does seemed to have been designed by Carlo Trezzi in homage to people who live for the sun, light and the heady perfume of the sea. The large glass areas that add movement to the hard top and which frame the large sliding top on either sides are a dead giveaway in that regard. The result is an open that manages to remain an open in spirit and light even when it offers all the comforts of a flybridge. Or even when the saloon, a six-seater dining area, bar and main pilothouse, are all transformed into a protected enclosed cocoon-like space. Moving aft, a large double sliding door leads out to a traditional cockpit that can double as either an al fresco dining area or sunbathing haven. Below it is the tender garage and then a swim platform which can be used to stow a wet bike and the crane. The 72’s interior fittings are customised and, in the example seen here, the elm furnishings are light and bright with white leather Frau sofas, bulkheads trimmed in Ultraleather (a particularly tough type of eco-friendly material) and raffia. The version exhibited at Genoa had a darker colour scheme and cherry furnishings. Below decks, the sleeping quarters include a full-beam owner’s stateroom amidships. Then there’s a choice of either one or two twin cabins and lastly a VIP foremost. All are en suite, of course. Twin 1,675 hp Cats give the DP 72 a 34-knot top speed and a 300-mile range at 27 knots thanks to 5,000-litre tanks </p>
