Remarks :

A traditional carvel built open workboat, River or Coastal launch, believed built originally circa 1960 but has been the subject to an extensive refit and rebuild over the last recent years. Construction is traditional carvel build with 3-3-5” mahogany planking on to oak frames spaced at 6” centres. Marine ply deck overlaid with teak. Single diesel engine installed, driving via conventional shaft and 3 bladed propeller. Ballast is via loose weights stowed in the forward sections and the keel is protected by a steel shoe running the entire length.

During the off season they were used by local fishermen, for mackerel fishing, crab and lobster potting as well as seine fishing for sand eels which were then used as bait for bass fishing. Currently ashore for the winter but due to be taken back to her mooring later in March.

Accommodation :

The boat was originally built in Teignmouth by a local builder, Leonard Matthews, and was part of a group of 10 built in the early sixties. These boats were originally used during the summer tourist season as self-drive hire vessels out of Teignmouth. During the off season they were used by local fishermen, for mackerel fishing, crab and lobster potting as well as seine fishing for sand eels which were then used as bait for bass fishing.

The boat was sold to ship builders Philip & Son where it was used as a work boat. We believe that Philip & Son acquired it in 1972 and it continued to be used by them until the late nineties when the yard was closed. The boat then came under the ownership of Noss on Dart Marina.

The boat became surplus to requirements at the turn of the century and fell into disrepair until it was bought as a reconstruction project. Little was done to the boat until the winter of 2003 when it was discovered by Andy Thomas a local Dartmouth shipwright who purchased it to bring it back into use.

After a full renovation it was acquired by the current owners who renamed it MR TOAD. It has been regularly maintained during the intervening years and recently underwent an extensive refurbishment by Andy Pomeroy a well respected Dartmouth boat builder and shipwright.
