    Owner's Comments

Wild Theme (named after Mark Knopfler's title track to the film Local Hero) has been with us since late 2002 when we became her second owners. She was originally purchased in 1990, and kept in the Solent. She did a race or two as Oracle (sponsored by Oracle), taking part in the 2-handed AZAB race in 1991, and coming 2nd in Group 2 non-rated in the Round the Island Race in 1993. She was then renamed as Persuasion II, and cruised the Channel Islands, Brittany and the West Country in the mid-1990s.

We spent the winter of 2002 sailing her in the Solent, then spent the spring refitting her before moving her up to Troon on the Clyde, and naming her Wild Theme.

As we explored the west coast of Scotland, we decided that Troon was simply too far south, so Wild Theme relocated to Arisag in 2006, then to Armadale on Skye in 2012.

Over nearly 12 years as part of our family, Wild Theme has proved to be a wonderful cruising yacht. Two of us have lived aboard in comfort for periods of up to five weeks at a time, and enjoyed welcoming many friends on board. She has plenty of storage, and is very sea-kindly compared to many more modern designs.

We are selling her now because over the last few years we have been spending increasing amounts of time with other pastimes, and have reluctantly decided to take a break from sailing. We'll therefore be selling her fully equipped, and as such she would be perfect as a ready-to-cruise first yacht.

    Maintenance and Improvements

When we first bought Wild Theme in 2002 she was well looked after, and was very much in her original spec, other than the addition of ST50 instruments (including autohelm), spinnaker gear and a Sailtainer in-boom mainsail furling system.

Within the first year we made a whole slew of improvements. We got rid of the Sailtainer after finding it to be unreliable. The previous owners had supplied the original boom and mainsail, so there was no problem doing this. We added two coats of epoxy to the hull, followed by Coppercoat antifouling. This is still in place. We had an Eberspacher Airtronic D2 heating system installed. We subsequently had problems with the digital, programmable control head being unreliable, and replaced it with a simple on/off/thermostat version. We added 50m of 3/8 chain and a Spade 80 anchor. That's possibly overkill for a yacht this size, but it continues to set and hold reliably. The original Danforth anchor now lives in the cockpit locker as an emergency spare. We had a new sprayhood made, as the old one was looking rather tired. The original nav area comprised a small instrument panel, plus book storage behind sliding doors. When we bought Wild Theme this area was cluttered up by a VHF and radar fixed to the head lining. We wanted to add a computer to the nav area, and there simply wasn't space. We therefore replaced the whole area with a single panel, with the instruments fitted flush. At the same time, all of the instrument and fuse panel wiring was replaced, and an inverter was fitted. The nav area has been reworked a second time, though, see photos.....

Between then and the present day, Wild Theme has seen a steady stream of further enhancements. The sails supplied were a genoa and large main, which were hard to balance nicely, and frequently overpowered the yacht (these are included in the sale). We replaced these with a fully-battened main and a jib, and have been delighted with the transformation; Wild Theme is now much better balanced on the helm and a joy to sail. At the same time as getting new sails, we also fitted (another) new sprayhood, but this time with a cockpit canopy. This canopy takes less than 5 minutes to erect or stow, and has transformed our cruising, becoming the preferred living space when at anchor until the sun has finally sunk below the horizon. Love it!  The ST50 instruments were finally retired (except for the trusty Autohelm) and replaced by a Garmin 700c touch-screen plotter fitted in the cockpit, a (roving) Garmin GMI 10 multi-purpose instrument head, and NMEA 2000 wind/speed/depth sensors. The VHF was replaced with a Garmin below-decks unit including AIS. This links to the chart plotter, showing the position of other vessels and making it easy to hail them. Yet another re-work of the nav area took place, as we no longer had need of the computer, and the radar was long in the tooth. We returned to the original design of having book storage, but created a new instrument panel to suit the instrumentation now fitted. A Waeco fridge was fitted underneath one of the saloon berths, to supplement the (non-refrigerated) coolbox. Most of the internal lighting, plus the masthead lighting, was upgraded with modern LED bulbs. That's the story so far...
