Bart's Bash: The world's largest sailing event takes shape
Something incredible is being planned for this September, which could make history and will certainly take the sailing world by storm. ‘Bart’s Bash’ aims to set a world record for the largest ever sailing event, planned for Sunday September 21st 2014.
Bart’s Bash promises to be a truly historic event, and it’s all in the name of much loved and greatly missed Olympic sailor Andrew ‘Bart’ Simpson who died on May 9 2013.
The central idea is to have a mass participation club race across the UK and the whole world.
The organizers says that most sailing clubs have a race on Sunday mornings, and so they want all kinds of boats taking part in this combined effort around the globe. The goal is to get everyone participating together to create one big event race. “If we can get hundreds of clubs taking part, with just their normal sailors racing on the water, we will generate thousands of Guinness World Record Holders in Andrew 'Bart' Simpson's name,” they say.
“We want every sailing club to host a race on the same day, September 21. It’s a fitting tribute to Bart,” explains Sir Ben Ainslie, a friend of Andrew Simpson’s and one of the founders of the charity in his name - Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation.
Jez Payne from 'The Bart Project' says: "It is one of those ideas that has huge potential to be a major, major event that absolutely honours the core of what Andrew was about.”

About the Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation:
Andrew Simpson was a gold and silver Olympic medallist, an America’s Cup professional and an influential character in world sailing. He was tragically killed in a training accident on San Francisco Bay in May 2013.
Andrew, or ‘Bart’ to his friends, was the person that everyone turned to for guidance, from beginners to people at the top of their game. Supporting the next generation was something he was extremely passionate about.
Founded by Sir Ben Ainslie, Iain Percy OBE & Andrew’s wife Leah, the Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation will work to honour Andrew’s life and legacy by encouraging youngsters into sailing.
