Buoy Racer: The Fastest Boat / Car Hybrid
It may look like a fictional vehicle that James Bond would find handy in a high speed chase, but the Panther car/boat hybrid from Californian manufacturers WaterCar is drawing in orders from Silicon Valley billionaires, anonymous celebrities and the Crown Prince of Dubai.
On dry land, the Panther can reach speeds of 80mph and up to 45mph on the water. Taking just 15 seconds to transform between car and speed boat, the amphibious vehicle allows seamless maneuverability between land and water. This luxury does not come cheap and the current waiting list to buy the Panther at $155,000 is 18-months.
WaterCar was established by Dave March in 1999 as he strove to build a boat/car hybrid capable of breaking the world record for the world’s fastest amphibious vehicle. It took until 2010 for WaterCar’s Python model to be unveiled. Able to reach a top speed of 60mph (52 knots) on water, the Python broke the record but was too expensive to manufacture for public sale.
The Panther features a lightweight chrome steel chassis, fiberglass hull and comes fitted with a 3.7 litre V6 engine. In order to not look out of place next to other luxury toys for the rich and famous, the Panther is fully customisable from colour to interior. After years of trial and error testing, WaterCar claim that the Panther is a better drive than most boats and a most versatile vehicle than most cars.
