Team Oracle USA Announce Collaboration With Airbus in Bid to Win 2017 America's Cup
The design of boats and planes may seem worlds apart, but Oracle Team USA, the defending America’s Cup champions are looking to the skies to help them build one of the fastest yachts on the planet.
It has been announced that Oracle Team USA will be partnering with aircraft manufacturer Airbus who will offer their expert engineers to work with the team’s designers. Supported by the deep pockets of billionaire businessman Larry Ellison, the collaboration intends to provide a consecutive Cup victory.
With a wing sail, hydrofoils and carbon fiber multihulls, the vessels competing in today’s America’s Cup races fly across the water much like planes. Fabrice Brégie, the President and CEO of Airbus said: "If you look at it closer, sailing and flying share a common DNA. Look at the importance of wind forces on airplane wings, and wind forces on the sails of a boat. They even look alike. And the speeds in aviation and boating share the same unit -- the knot."
Although a strong team performance is what ultimately is the difference between the teams in the America’s Cup, the vast amounts of money spent on the engineering and technology behind each boat is also a huge deciding factor.
Oracle Team USA have begun testing their boat with Airbus, collecting a huge amount of data and variables to improve its design until it can reach its optimum performance.
