Will Drone Ships Become Reality by 2020?
Rolls-Royce paves the way into the future with unmanned drone ships controlled from land. The buisness is working together with strong partners on the necessary technology to control cargo ships from virtual bridges on land. The project shall be realized by 2020.
The $375 billion shipping industry carries 90% of world trade. Rolls Royce partnered up with strong players in the industry such as the leading mobile satellite business Inmarsat, marine certification body DVN GL and the offshore engineering and construction group Deltamarin. Their new project will not only make all the processes more efficient but also reduce pollution and make the open seas safer.
All the technologies for drone ships already exist, however, it is all about bringing them together and about testing the combined technologies. It is even possible that the new technology will revolutinize the whole shipping industry by creating new services for the industry.
