PLYMOUTH PILOTS: - The Story
Few traditionally shaped, inshore Westcountry fishing boat around today can boast a pedigree stretching back nearly 50 years.
The now familiar shape of the Plymouth Pilot was conceived in the 1960’s by two Westcountry craftsmen seeking to create the ‘perfect inshore fishing boat’. The design evolved from the ‘Old Teignmouth Pilot launch’ a wooden boat constructed in the late 1930’s.
The Plymouth Pilot design uses a displacement hull form with long keel and skeg combination. This produces a boat which is sea worthy, stable, reliable, and very economical to run with incredible grip on the water.
Testimony to the build quality of these Plymouth Pilots is the fact that there have been over 2,500 boats built and sold, with the majority of the earlier boats still in use today world wide.
