OVERVIEW
It's amazing that a ski boat designed in Minnesota and built in North Dakota can have such a California flavor. The GTR 22 looks like a high-performance boat with its stylish lines, deep forward keel, notably low-profile gunwales, swept-down stern and fresh graphics. It drives like one, too, when powered up with the PCM ZR6 and accelerating to 36 mph in less than 6 seconds.
The interior is where the practical Midwestern sensibilities come into play, with functional amenities spread out across a generous 96-inch beam. Legroom is good around the engine box, and you can open up more rear space by taking out the removable rear bench. It's easy to step over the built-in cooler alongside the dash to get to the open bow. Similarly, it's no problem crossing over the rear sun pad to use the molded-in swim platform. The GTR 22 is an affordable example of style and substance coming together.
SKIING
Gekko prides itself on its passion for skiing, and that love is on display in a tournament-approved tow boat. The GTR 22's low-slung sports-car design complements its skiing performance. It's also one of the best-tracking boats we've tested, and has the responsiveness to match. With a hull that suppresses chine spray to the point that it virtually disappears — even at short line lengths — it's no wonder its design is copyrighted. The size and softness of the wakes are also impressive, with only a slight bump at 22 off. With features like a removable rear seat, a low step-over transom and a large molded-in ski platform, taking a set has never been easier.
