Octopus was built in 2003 by Lurssen Yachts, the German shipbuilding company based in Bremen-Vegesack.
Her exterior designed was by Espen Øino Naval Architects and interior by designer Jonathan Quinn Barnett of Seattle.
Allen bought the boat in 2003 for about $US200 million and it reportedly requires a full-time crew of at least 55 and more than $US20 million to run each year.
Octopus comes equipped with two helicopters on the top deck, a beautiful glass-bottomed swimming pool, a music recording studio, a cinema and two submarines - one of them believed to be operated by remote control for studying the bottom of the ocean.
Octopus can reach speeds of 20 knots.

Rising Sun was built in 2004 by Lurssen Yachts, the German shipbuilding company based in Bremen-Vegesack.
Her interior was designed by Seccombe Design from San Francisco, United States.
