<div>CETACEA was designed as a performance ocean-going live aboard cruiser for a couple who had plans for extended voyages. She was designed by a renowned designer, Rodger Martin, who specializes in ocean going yachts.</div>
<div>Systems are intentionally kept simple so as to not have the usual maintenance problems of many highly equipped production boats. All systems are easily accessible.</div>
<div>The structure of the hull and deck are monocoque construction, guaranteeing a strong, watertight deck to hull connection. The hull is reinforced with Kevlar at the waterline, the bow is double with a keelson running from stem to first bulkhead, and the boat has two watertight bulkheads, all for safety against collision with a semi-submerged steel container.</div>
<div>The bulkheads and integral stringers are all well tabbed into the hull to form a very rigid and strong hull and deck. The hull layup itself uses E-Glass with vinyl ester resin, and is coated in epoxy to prevent osmosis, with an airex foam core in the hull and Divinycell foam core in the deck for a very light and stiff structure.</div>
<div>The rig is over designed, both the mast, cable and fittings. Additionally, since the genoa is only 100%, the spreaders and shrouds can be all the way outboard for additional strength. The rig is checked by a professional rigger every year and is still in very good condition.</div>
<div>The hull shape is based on Rodger Martin&#39;s research and experience including feedback from around the world ocean going racers who have single-handed on Martin design boats. And with the owner&#39;s input as an architect and circumnavigator, the boat incorporated features that make it most suitable for long distance ocean cruising.</div>
<div>The three of most valuable design features that Rodger got feedback on were: 1. having sufficient buoyancy forward to keep the bow up in large following seas, 2. topside flare for healing stiffness, 3. lightness of the boat so it slides off a wave instead of being slammed down in a knockdown.</div>
<div>The owner states, &quot;I can personally attest to Cetacea&#39;s offshore sailing qualities in heavy weather. In a crossing with my wife from the Canaries to the West Indies in February of 1997, we had trade winds of 30 to 40 kts with cross rollers coming down from the North Atlantic storms. The Monitor self-steering wind vane kept the boat on course, wing and wing with a double reefed main and poled out genoa. Every 6-7th wave built up so as to make Cetacea surf down the wave making her go 18 Kts, and never coming close to burying the bow in the wave ahead. The boat was level and left a flat wake.&quot;</div>
